Join ACUI CEO John Taylor as he welcomes ACUI Bulletin authors and higher education professionals Carlos Morales-Gonzales, the inaugural First Peoples Center director at California State University–San Bernardino, and Anindita Sengupta, director of student multicultural affairs at the University of Massachusetts–Boston, as they discuss the student union as the campus hub where all student identities have historically found a home. You are encouraged to read the Bulletin article by the presenters that will guide this discussion.
About the Presenters
- Carlos Morales-Gonzales became California State University–San Bernardino’s first-ever coordinator for its new First Peoples Center in 2022, a cultural center that was expanded during a 2021 renovation and expansion of the Santos Manuel Student Center. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in gender, ethnicity, and multicultural studies from California State Polytechnic University–Pomona. He is currently a lecturer in Cal State–San Bernardino’s Department of Kinesiology.
- Anindita Sengupta is director of student multicultural affairs at the University of Massachusetts–Boston, which includes the Cultural Collaborative made up of six student-led cultural centers, Immigrant Student Programs, the Multicultural Coalition of all student organizations, student support services, and undocumented student support. She holds a Ph.D. in gender sexuality studies from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree from Jadavpur University in international relations and affairs.

As a result of attending this program, participants will:
- Explore opportunities for creating engaging student learning environments for a vast array of student identities.
- Discover how programming can be tailored to create new opportunities for cultural enrichment, community building, and student empowerment.
- Discuss successes with tailoring engagement in settings that include mentoring, one-on-one interactions, and small group activities.
