ACUI Professionals Gather for Facilities & Building Management Seminar
Campuses at Davidson College and the University of North Carolina–Charlotte set the stage for the latest edition of ACUI’s Facilities and Building Management Seminar, with presenters representing Johns Hopkins University, Perkins & Will, Chartwells, and UNC–Wilmington, in addition to professionals from the host campuses.
The June 2–4 seminar attracted 46 attendees and offered six educational blocks, 12 speakers, and tours of both student centers at the University of North Carolina–Charlotte (Popp Martin & Cone), Davidson College’s Alvarez Union and Lula Bell Houston Resource Center, and UNC–Charlotte’s Botanical Gardens.
A Tuesday night social was held at Norm’s Lounge and the newly renovated esports arena inside UNC–Charlotte’s Popp Martin Student Union. The student union’s 1,600-square-foot gaming arena was renovated last year after receiving a $1.5 million allocation from the North Carolina General Assembly that paid for 31 competition-ready PCs, an iRacing Rig, a designated lounge space, and other amenities.
Davidson’s Lula Bell Houston Resource Center offers financial counseling, cooking equipment, unique programming, business and winter clothing, food and hygiene products, and academic resources, among other things. The botanical gardens at UNC–Charlotte contain 10 acres of outdoor gardens, a 4,500-square-foot glasshouse, and a 1,200-volume botanical library.
Educational sessions during the seminar included “How Esports Reshapes the Campus with Inclusive, Student-Centered Learning Space,” “Engaging Operations in Campus Planning & Projects,” “Doing More with Less: From Constraints to Capacity in Student Center Operations,” and “Alarms are Going Off … What the BEAP Do We Do?” The keynote for the event was “Event and Building Operations from an Emergency Management Perspective,” presented by Kevin Martin, UNC–Charlotte’s director of emergency management.
