ACUI Begins Review of Core Competencies; First Since 2019
Every six years, ACUI re-evaluates its core competencies, a guide around the knowledge and skills professionals need to do their jobs as campus community builders. As the profession changes over time, so must the core competencies. The last full core competency review was completed in 2019, and a new one is beginning now.
The ACUI Education Council is the component group responsible for the core competencies, and the council is currently offering a survey to get the review started. If you are an ACUI member and have not completed the survey, please do so before ACUI’s Annual Conference.
The next step is conducting focus groups, the first of which will be next Tuesday, February 17, at 1 p.m. Eastern. Two more focus groups will follow, on Thursday, February 19, at 4 p.m. Eastern, and again on Tuesday, February 24, at 9 a.m. Eastern. To participate in the focus groups, contact Scarlett Winters at swinters@acui.org with the session you prefer to attend. Access information will then be sent to you.

A webinar conducted in May 2025 entitled Utilizing the Core Competencies can be found in the On Demand library. The 45-minute program was hosted by Education Council Members Jackie Grinvalds, director of student center operations, Emory University; Nick Smith, Ph.D., senior associate director of university unions and director of the center for campus involvement, University of Michigan–Ann Arbor; and Lincoln Walburn, Ed.D., capital project manager at the University of North Carolina–Wilmington.
