Region VIII Renames Award to Honor Work of the Late Holly Sateia

Acting upon the recommendation of the Region VIII Leadership Team, ACUI’s Board of Trustees has approved the renaming of the Region VIII College Union and Campus Life Role Model Award to recognize the work of Holly Sateia, who retired from Dartmouth College in 2010 after 40 years at the campus, including as dean of students and vice president for institutional diversity and equity. A past ACUI Board of Trustees member and recipient of ACUI’s Honorary Lifetime Membership, Sateia died from cancer in February 2022.

In submitting the Region VIII Leadership Team’s endorsement to the Board of Trustees, Region VIII Director Adam Dunbar shared that, “To know Holly Sateia was to know an extraordinary person. She was the epitome of a treasured friend, colleague, educator, and mentor. The lives she touched were impacted in the most positive way and she fostered those connections for decades. Her sense of humor and humility, coupled with her passion for social justice and ‘doing the right thing,’ was inspiring to behold.”

Sateia’s work with ACUI began in 1990 while serving as director of Dartmouth’s Collis Center and looking for information to guide her in the renovation of that facility. She soon became involved with the region as a volunteer, and in 1995, she served as the host chair for the Regional Conference held at Dartmouth. She held a variety of positions on the Regional Leadership Team, culminating in her serving as the regional director from 2000–03. In 2005, she served as the educational sessions chair for the Regional Institute hosted by the University of Cork in Ireland; and in 2006, she received the region’s Distinguished Service Award.

The stated purpose of the award is: “A role model is an individual who inspires us to action, a person who others wish to follow and emulate. The Holly Sateia College Union and Campus Life Role Model Award is presented to a professional who best exemplifies outstanding achievement in the college union/student activities field and the ideals of The Role of the College Union.”
