Get Used to it: Your Latest Update on AI in Higher Education

In just under 15 years, Miami University in Ohio has reduced carbon emissions from its campus buildings by over 60%—one contributing factor being waste reduction at busy places like the Armstrong Student Center. Armstrong building managers succeeded by increasing organic material composting through the use of artificial intelligence; in 2023, Armstrong turned nearly five tons of organic material, food waste, and compostable paper into soil.

The student center has been using zero-touch, zero-waste recycling stations that gamify the process when students wave the product in front of an interactive screen. If there is liquid remaining in that plastic bottle, for example, it will remind you to empty it.
