Regional Director

The regional director serves as the elected representative of the region on the ACUI Leadership Team, overseeing a team of volunteers and managing the regional budget.

This position provides strategic leadership, supervision, and support to the Regional Leadership Team, ensuring alignment with ACUI’s mission and goals. The regional director is responsible for driving the region’s programs, services, and business operations, fostering a shared vision, and maintaining accountability among volunteers.

This is an Association-leading volunteer position, ideal for those interested in determining and advancing strategic directions, governing over long-term goals, representing the association to other members, and setting the tone for member experiences.

This position reports to the ACUI Leadership Team and is supported by the Central Office staff. The regional director serves a two-year term and is responsible for the following:

Leadership & Oversight
  • Empower and support Regional Leadership Team members to successfully fulfill their roles and responsibilities.
  • Inspire a shared vision and direction for the region, ensuring programs align with ACUI’s core competencies and strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee regional programs and services to ensure they serve the professional development needs of members and institutions.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to Regional Leadership Team members, facilitating professional growth and readiness.
  • Encourage creativity and innovation while ensuring productivity and goal achievement.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all regional matters and facilitate communication between the region and ACUI.
  • Attend biweekly regional director meetings to collaborate with fellow regional directors and ACUI leadership.
Volunteer Management & Accountability
  • Directly supervise Regional Leadership Team members, managing performance and fostering accountability.
  • Work closely with the membership and belonging experience manager to ensure effective volunteer management processes, including recruitment, and onboarding.
  • Support Regional Leadership Team members in developing the skills needed to manage and engage volunteers.
  • Maintain regular one-on-one meetings with Regional Leadership Team members to provide mentorship and strategic guidance.
Strategic Planning & Execution
  • Ensure regional programs and initiatives align with the Association’s strategic goals and deliver comprehensive educational experiences.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of regional goals, ensuring measurable outcomes and progress tracking.
  • Encourage data-driven decision-making and continuous assessment to improve regional offerings.
  • Monitor regional structures, policies, and processes, making necessary adjustments to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Financial Oversight
  • Develop and manage the regional budget in collaboration with the business manager.
  • Ensure financial sustainability by overseeing revenue generation plans, including sponsorships and fundraising efforts.
  • Review and approve financial transactions in compliance with association policies.
Outreach & Engagement
  • Serve as the face of the region by representing regional interests within ACUI.
  • Engage with member institutions, professionals, and students to identify needs and opportunities for involvement.
  • Promote regional initiatives and encourage participation in programs and leadership opportunities.

A screening committee made up of the volunteer team leader, the staff liaison, and other related volunteers will review applications, interview qualified candidates, and make a selection recommendation.

At the time of application, individuals must have: full-time employment at a higher education institution; institutional membership; a signed institutional support form; and a commitment to fulfilling the duties of the position for the length of the term. Applicants must also demonstrate an understanding of ACUI’s vision, core values, and core competencies, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. 

Association-leading volunteer positions require a commitment of two or more years, except for student positions which have a one-year term. During the course of the term, volunteers should anticipate at least four hours of conference call and project work per month, in addition to attending in-person ACUI Leadership Team meetings.
