DESCRIPTION:IPDS is a New Professionals Seminar designed for individuals beginning their careers in higher education\, within college union and student activities roles. This seminar lays a strong foundation for a successful career in the field. Through an immersive multi-day experience\, participants have the opportunity to enhance their skills\, broaden their networks\, and chart a clear path for success. This year\, we will be collocating IPDS with the Aspiring Directors Institute (ADI). Participants of IPDS will have the opportunity to engage with seasoned professionals in shared educational sessions to promote cross-institute networking.  \n\n\n\nTopics for IPDS often include the role of college unions\, supervision\, budgeting\, assessment\, marketing\, student learning\, the law and higher education\, and career development. Her Mason experience fuels her passion for creating meaningful environments where students can build community and make lasting memories.  \n\n\n\n  Victoria Culver Rice is the student engagement manager at Metropolitan Community College–Kansas City’s Blue River campus\, where she oversees the Campus Life and Leadership and Career Center Departments. Victoria has cultivated extensive experience in leadership development\, campus programming\, and student success initiatives through her career including serving as the assistant director of student engagement at Missouri State University. She is an active contributor to ACUI\, where she has served on advisory and competency review groups\, held multiple volunteer position\, and presented multiple times. Victoria holds a Master of Education in higher education and student affairs from Indiana University–Bloomington and bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and psychology from Missouri State University. Victoria is known for her collaborative approach\, engaging presentation style\, and passion for creating inclusive\, connected campus communities.  \n\n\n\n  Kim Nicas earned her master’s degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia in parks\, recreation\, and tourism. After working in public parks and recreation for nearly 20 years\, she transitioned to higher education and began working at the University of Central Missouri in 2013. Come hear about the experiences of three institutions: \n\n\n\n\nTimothy Johnson\, Director of Claflin University Student Center\, Clafin University\n\n\n\nEve Esch\, Executive Director of Bloomberg Student Center\, John Hopkins University\n\n\n\nDan Goodwin\, Senior Director\, Student Union & Student Life Programs\, University of Texas–Dallas  \n\n\n\n\nParticipants will gain practical insights into project leadership\, operational planning\, stakeholder collaboration\, and the professional competencies needed to lead transformational campus initiatives.  \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters\n\n\n\n\n\nEve Esch serves as executive director of the Bloomberg Student Center at Johns Hopkins University. Johns Hopkins celebrated its sesquicentennial by opening its First Ever Student Center in August 2025.  \n\n\n\nEve grew up in Indiana and earned her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University. She earned her master’s from Ohio State University\, where she helped them build a brand new building in 2010 and after working there for 16 years moved to Texas to serve as the executive director of the University of Houston’s three student centers\, one of which was brand new and another completed renovated in 2015. Eve’s spent her entire career in college unions and student centers and has worked on all aspects of events\, conferences and facilities.  \n\n\n\nEve enjoys spending time with family (two daughters\, one dog\, and a tortoise) and is a long-time volunteer for ACUI\, currently serving on the Volunteer Development Committee and recently served as a board member for the nonprofit “because I said I would.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Dan Goodwin serves as senior director of the Student Union at University of Texas–Dallas\, where he leads the strategic vision\, operations\, and programming of one of the university’s most dynamic student-centered spaces. In this role\, he oversees facility management\, student engagement initiatives\, and large-scale campus events that enrich the student experience and foster a strong sense of community.  \n\n\n\n With a focus on inclusive leadership and student development\, Goodwin is dedicated to creating environments where all students feel welcomed\, supported\, and connected. His work emphasizes collaboration across campus departments\, innovative programming\, and responsive services that reflect the evolving needs of a diverse student population.  \n\n\n\nGoodwin brings extensive experience in higher education administration\, with expertise in student affairs\, campus operations\, and organizational leadership. He is passionate about enhancing campus life through meaningful engagement opportunities\, leadership development\, and co-curricular experiences that complement academic success.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTimothy Johnson is a native of Baltimore\, Maryland\, by way of Charlotte\, North Carolina. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree while working full-time as the executive director of the Claflin Student Center. My name is Ben Griffith\, and I currently serve as the assistant director of student organizations at Tulane University. Prior to working at Tulane\, I received my M.S. in higher education administration\, with an emphasis in student affairs\, from Texas A&M University in 2021. In my role\, I support the holistic student organization experience here on campus\, from overseeing the event registration process\, advisor training and development\, and student leader support to helping students start new organizations. Additionally\, I serve as the advisor to the Tidal Wave Homecoming Committee that plans all the homecoming events for students. Lastly\, I supervise our Student Organization Center that provides resources and support services to all organizations on campus\, including supervising several student employee teams that provide ongoing support to our student organizations on campus. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English education and a master’s degree in higher education administration\, both from Old Dominion University. Kyonna works as the director of student life and engagement at University of South Florida–St. Petersburg. There\, she provides strategic leadership and direction in the following areas: Commuter and Off-Campus Housing\, Multicultural Affairs\, Leadership and Student Organizations\, The Crow’s Nest student newspaper\, Harborside Activities Board\, event response team\, and the Mascot program. She leads a team of six. \n\n\n\nIn her community\, she is a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority\, Inc. since November 2006. She currently serves as the president for the ODU Black Alumni Chapter\, but\, most of all\, she loves to prepare her eight-year-old daughter for a life well lived as a powerful and strong Black girl. \n\n\n\nHer favorite quote to live by is from Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful\, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed\, it is the only thing that ever has.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Merrill (he/him/his)\n\n\nKevin Merrill is the assistant director of the Memorial Union and student engagement at Iowa State University. A proud Iowa State University alumnus\, Kevin earned his degree in advertising in 2005 and later completed a master’s in college student personnel at Western Illinois University in 2008. Kevin oversees the leadership and service programs\, as well as student organization resources. By working closely with students to navigate policies\, access resources\, and build meaningful communities\, he ensures that every student feels connected and valued\, transforming a campus of 30\,000 into a network of smaller\, close-knit communities. Kevin’s career has spanned across student affairs\, including work in student activities\, admissions\, residence life\, and housing administration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Umbarger (she/her/hers)\n\n\nMary brings more than a decade of experience in student engagement and leadership development to the Student Organization Institute. During her tenure as student organization and leadership coordinator at the University of Illinois–Springfield\, she managed registration and training for over 65 student organizations\, oversaw major campus traditions\, and led initiatives to strengthen student onboarding and community building. She has advised both the activities board and the funding board at the university. She also spent over five years working at the U.S. Green Building Council\, where\, as manager of community\, she developed and managed a local chapter network for building industry professionals and helped create the Emerging Green Builders program that integrates students and young professionals into the green building movement. Meghan also worked as environmental educator for the University at Buffalo Green Office\, organizing campus and community education focused on energy conservation\, green building\, and sustainable living. Bowser\n\n\nRachel A. Bowser assumed the position of vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college and professor of English on July 1\, 2022. As vice president\, she oversees the academic program\, the faculty\, and academic support services. Most recently\, she was associate provost for strategic initiatives and professor of English at Georgia Gwinnett College. She received her bachelor’s degree from Grove City College\, master’s degree from West Virginia University\, and Ph.D. from Emory University—all in English. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSheila Higgs\n\n\nSheila Higgs is a two-time bestselling author\, accomplished speaker\, facilitator\, and a certified Executive & Leadership Transitions Coach with 30 years of experience in the higher education sector. She specializes in helping aspiring executives and leaders to successfully transition to their next level of leadership. \n\n\n\nSheila believes in people\, values\, and leading with heart. She incorporates her knowledge of leadership\, people\, communication\, and energy to create a transformational experience for her clients. 100% of her Leader on the Rise clients have successfully transitioned to next level leadership roles. \n\n\n\nSheila holds an MBA from the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas–Fayetteville\, a Master of Education in student affairs administration from Indiana University–Bloomington\, and a Bachelor of Science in mass communication and political science. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nErika H. James\n\n\nErika H. James became the dean of the Wharton School on July 1\, 2020. Trained as an organizational psychologist\, Erika is a leading expert on crisis leadership\, workplace diversity\, and management strategy. Prior to her appointment at Wharton\, Erika was the John H. Harland Dean at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School from 2014 to 2020. \n\n\n\nAn award-winning educator\, accomplished consultant\, and innovative researcher\, she has paved the way for women in leadership both in education and corporate America. Erika has been instrumental in developing groundbreaking executive education programs\, including the Women in Leadership Program at the University of Virginia’s Darden School. \n\n\n\nErika serves on the boards of Morgan Stanley\, The Economic Club of New York\, and Pomona College. She is a sought-after thought leader whose expertise has been quoted by The Wall Street Journal\, MSNBC\, Bloomberg\, The Washington Post\, and numerous other media outlets. Her latest book is “The Prepared Leader: Emerge from Any Crisis More Resilient Than Before” (Wharton School Press)\, which she co-authored with Lynn Perry Wooten\, president of Simmons University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole Long\n\n\nNicole Long joined Agnes Scott in April 2023 as the vice president for finance and administration. In this role\, she oversees the college’s finance\, accounting\, facilities\, dining operation\, institutional technology\, and public safety functions. Her career spans 25 years in finance with Fortune 500 companies\, including WestRock\, The Coca-Cola Company\, AT&T\, and General Motors. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA in finance from Florida A&M University and is a proud Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc. member. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChicora Martin\n\n\nChicora Martin assumed the position of vice president for student affairs and dean of students on November 1\, 2022. Previously\, Chicora served as vice president of student life and dean of students at Mills College in Oakland\, California.
